Family: Son Gohan (Grandfather), Chichi (Wife), Son Gohan (Eldest Son, Yup folks, he's named after the other Son Gohan), Son Goten (Youngest Son), Ox King (Father in law)
 

History/Background
Goku bassically started out like every other Saiyan child -- hyperactive, rebellious and acted like a rascal. And like every other Saiyan child, he was sent off-planet to annihiliate the inhabitants. In his case, he was sent to Eart and when a fellow Earthling -- Son Gohan found him, he basically 'adopted' him and named him Son Goku. And as an infant Goku was a VERY hard child to handle, but one day, Goku fell from a clift and hurt his head, and technically gone retarded. And after that day, Goku became very quiet and easy to handle.
And when he was a little older, he accidentally looked up at the moon, and all of you know what happens when a Saiyan looks up to the moon, right? So anyway, he tuned Oozaru and squashed his Grandpa Gohan. After that, he lived all on his own and one day, Bulma came along and asked for his help to look for Dragonballs.........

So that's how he came about, and if you want to know more, go read the comic, I'd advise against the cartoon though, 'coz that would take a LONG time, whereas 43 comic books isn't that much now......... isn't it?

Character
If you want to describe Goku, two words says it all -- Childish, and Stupid. But even though he's childish and stupid, when it comes to family and friends, he would protect them with his life and he is basically a good guy.

Vegeta  

Name: Vegeta
Race: 100% Saiyan
Family: Bulma(Wife), Trunks(Son), Bra(Daughter), Mr. & Mrs. Briefs(Father and Mother-in-law)

History/Background
Vegeta was introduced to Dragonball shortly after Raditz(Goku's elder brother) death. Although in Dragonball Mr. Akira doesn't say much about his childhood but i think when he was like, 10, he was sent away to some Planet and Freeza took the opportunity to destroy Vegeta-sei-and-Population and bluffed Vegeta that a comet rammed into his planet. And so after that he continued to work for Freeza (Destroying all living beings on a planet and then sell it) and one day he heard what was going on here on Earth through Raditz's Scouter and then he and his servant Nappa came to Earth in their Ball-like-Spacepods........

Character
Basically Vegeta is a VERY proud and ruthless person, but after he became a good guy, (some how) he fell for Bulma and I think he softned a little......
